Introduction

The upcycling story of an about to be goodwill kitchen utensil and how it transformed into a turntable. During quarantine I found myself spending more time with music, I discovered a new appreciation for electronic music and the art of the DJ. While I was spinning records on my family’s old turntable, I thought it could use a major redesign and upgrade. So when I saw the old wooden dish rack on its way to Goodwill, the mashup emerged and the Floating Turntable was born. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Gotta Start Somewhere

The dish rack and turntable before the creative process began.

First Cuts

I try not to get caught up on the little details when I am first working on a prototype. I love jumping right into a process and learning from my failures.

Thought Process

I needed a “cool” factor when going into this project. I decided to mount the turntable on a clear acrylic sheet to give the effect that it was floating in its frame.

First Look

Thankfully the electronic components comprised simply of power, RCA audio out and two essentially useless speakers; finding a spot to mount them for easy access was a piece of cake. Quickly painting the frame and added some faux fur to the interior added some icing to the cake, but not the final cherry…

Final

Adding the LED light mixed with the faux fur underneath really gives the floating illusion. While this process in no way improved sound quality it was a great exercise in quick prototyping, and a great way to show upcycling. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
